L'accord, dont Reuters a fait état ce mois-ci, intervient un an après que les trois pays ont établi leur premier partenariat majeur en matière de défense en combinant le projet britannique Future Combat Air System, ou Tempest, avec le japonais F-X dans le cadre d'un programme baptisé Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP). Les parlements de chaque pays doivent ratifier l'accord, qui vise à développer un avion de combat de nouvelle génération d'ici 2035. La phase de développement débutera en 2025. Le siège gouvernemental du GCAP et son équivalent industriel seront tous deux basés en Grande-Bretagne. Le premier directeur général de l'organisation gouvernementale sera originaire du Japon, tandis que le premier dirigeant de l'organisation commerciale viendra d'Italie, a-t-il été annoncé.

L'avion furtif supersonique qui sera développé dans le cadre du programme sera équipé d'un radar capable de fournir 10.000 fois plus de données que les systèmes actuels, a déclaré le gouvernement britannique. Le britannique BAE Systems, l'italien Leonardo, le fabricant européen de missiles MBDA et le constructeur de moteurs Rolls-Royce participent au projet. Reuters a rapporté que les entreprises japonaises Mitsubishi Heavy Industries et Mitsubishi Electric Corp, ainsi que les fabricants de moteurs IHI Corp et Avio Aero étaient également impliqués dans le projet.

BAE Systems has revealed the design of an autonomous collaborative platform (ACP) demonstrator which it aims to fly within the next two years. Displayed as a sub-scale model at the World Defense Show near Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the aircraft builds on the company’s earlier work in designing a Concept 2 vehicle unveiled in July 2022.

Relying on the integration of artificial intelligence, the attritable platform would feature so-called goal-based autonomy. Roles could include intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, and electronic attack, with the asset also potentially to carry air-to-surface and air-to-air weapons within two internal bays.
The single-engined concept is comparable in size to BAE’s Hawk advanced jet trainer. Reeves says the internally-funded design will have subsonic performance, electric actuation, and some use of low-observable features.

"If we want to do this, it's going to cost quite a lot of money, and we're going to have to allocate significant additional funding from outside the core defence budget as it currently exists."
