Subject: F-15's one winged landing - true or false?
Dear Mr. Lombardi,
My name is E *** ******, and I live in Israel, one of
Boeing's long time customers.
As you might know, according to the Israeli AF bulletin and
website, on May 1st, 1983, an Israeli Air Force F-15D
fighter had a mid-air collision with an Israeli Skyhawk. The
Skyhawk exploded, with his pilot ejecting safely, while the
F-15 lost its right wing, and managed to land safely.
There are offical interviews of the Israeli pilot,
describing in a great detail exactly what happened from his
perspective during the flight, and official pictures of the
plane on the ground, with no right wing, were published.
More images, and probably videos too, were sent to Boeing.
The Eagle's designers couldn't believe it, but they were
convinced, and Boeing later sent the IAF a new wing for the
damaged F-15D.
Recently however, I came accross a group of people that
claim that this incident never happened, and is purely an
Israeli propaganda. They will not except the interviews made
with the pilot as evidence for the authenticity of the
incident, and neither pictures of that plane on the ground. These people
are not alone - they are part of a much larger
group that won't believe many of the Israeli Air Force's
achievements, and their ideology is spreading.
They say they will only except real in-flight pictures of
the plane, flying with no right wing. I hope that you still
got any of these pictures, and will appreciate if you could
send some of them to me.
If you don't have any pictures, I will appreciate any other
kind of an authentic document that you might have regarding
this flight. For example, I thought that maybe you could see
whether Boeing did actually produce a new wing for the
damaged plane and if it was sent to Israel for free.
And if you have none of the above, I would appreciate if you
could write down your own opinion about this flight. I hope
they will consider you, as the Boeing historian, a reliable
source.
Thanks in advance for your time,
E*** ********,
Israel

Dear Mr. *******,
I have a similar experience here in the United States with those that
claim that the moon landings were a hoax - so I completely understand
your frustration!
I checked with our McDonnell Douglas historian and he agrees that the
incident certainly did happen and that McDonnell Douglas had absolutely
no reason to think otherwise - Boeing continues to stand by the claims
of the Israeli Air Force.
While we do not have any other information than what is already been
published you could point to the fact that the incident has never been
refuted or even remotely challenged by any knowledgeable or
authoritative source.
As to the insistence on seeing in-flight photos or even film - I would
certainly be amazed if there were in-flight photos of this incident and
even more amazed if someone had filmed it!
I have a lot of records of aircraft in emergency situations and one
thing that they all have in common is that no one took in-flight photos
or film. In a rare instance there might be someone on the ground that
photographs a plane in distress - but again that is extremely rare.
Best wishes,
Michael Lombardi
